Under Armour What's Beautiful Challenge - Beating Kahne

Good Morning ladies!

I've declared a goal for the "What's Beautiful" Under Armour Woman's Challenge. My goal is to run a 5K in 22 minutes! This is a very personal goal that I take seriously. To make this fun for myself, I've decided while I'm in training, I'd like to inspire woman to run with me this October 13th!

If you are a NASCAR fan, this is going to be even more meaningful! The 5K is hosted by Kasey Kahne- they call it the Five Kahne 5K. Proceeds raised go to his Foundation- and they donate to The Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, Make a Wish Foundation, the NC STEAM, and other children's charities. Check out the Kasey Kahne Foundation website for more information.

Today is the first day of training, and guess what? It's "National Running Day" !! So it's only fitting that we head outside, or on the treadmill for a run.  If you are new to running, you have five months to get your body in 5K shape, that is more then the required time you need, so lucky you- you've got a head start!

This goal to beat Kahne might sound a bit over-zealous to you. Kahne can run three miles in under 23 minutes! That means I have to shave (at least) 10 minutes off of last year's run time- which was 31:27! I have a lot of work to do- but I have no fear! This is realistic because I've been running, and participating in sports for at least 14 years, so I'm sure if I set my sights on things above, and have a lot of faith, I can, and I WILL achieve this goal. Whatever excuse I have to not reach this goal needs to be thrown away.

My biggest fitness accomplishment was competing in Bikini Fitness Competitions in Boston, MA, East Haven, CT, and Toronto, Ontario Canada. I've made my lifestyle be all about fitness, and I know how to 'get in the zone.' I consider a 3 mile run, my short run!

It's time to get started. First, log online and register now for the event. Registration is $25 until June 12th, after that day prices go up. Go to www.kaseykahnefoundation.com- and click on the 2013 FiveKahne banner. You'll be able to find more details about the event - including the link to register.

When you're registered, get outside for a 10 minute run! Why? What's Beautiful? You're running!

What's Beautiful?
Donating to children's charities!

What's Beautiful?
Running with your friends!

What's Beautiful?
Living a healthy, athletic life!

What's Beautiful?
Beating Kahne!

Be sure to follow me on twitter- I will be posting about my journey! You can find me at @FitnFaithful.
Use the hashtag #whatsbeautiful to follow other athletes in their challenges. Who knows, maybe you'll score some cool tips, and tricks on becoming a better runner!

Thanks for joining me- and I look forward to connecting with you this summer!

Johnson claims seventh victory at Martinsville

Johnson claims victory, October 2012
Jimmie Johnson started the Tums 500 in Martinsville, Va on the pole, led a total of 193 laps eight different times and finished the 500 lap race in first.

"Definitely was a strong performance for the team," Johnson told members of the press after the race

This marks Johnson's 59th career win, and 7th at the paperclip  track, tying with teammate Jeff Gordon.

The driver of the No. 24 Pepsi Max Chevy started in 11th. After an uneventful but smooth and steady race, leading three different times for a total of 92 laps,  Gordon  finished in seventh and is sixth in points.

Kasey Kahne started in 15th and moved ahead slowly, had a chance to lead 12 laps and went on to finish third at the track he doesn't believe he is good at.

"Felt good to have a good run at Martinsville.  It's a tough track for me.  Has been since I came into the Sprint Cup Series," said Kahne.

Kahne won the pole here in the spring, but in a weird twist of luck, his engine blew and he couldn't finish the race. Bad luck was a cruel April Fools joke that was played on the three Hendrick Motorsports drivers. Johnson and Gordon were involved in a wreck in the final laps and ruined their chance of a one-two- three finish for the team (Dale Earnhardt Jr. would've been the third).

Earnhardt Jr. was the only HMS driver that had survived the misfortune that day and was the one to finish third. His strongest season with the team will not end well for the Diet Dew No. 88 driver, he lost his chance at the Cup title because he missed the Charlotte and Kansas races for medical reasons. He returned to racing after a two week  leave by doctors orders. He suffered headaches after a crash during practice in Kansas in August. He decided to admit having headaches and went to visit a doctor after the crash in Talladega, where he was diagnosed with a concussion, presumably his second in a two month time span. Earnhardt Jr. wasn't as lucky this weekend as he was in the spring race. He started in 20th on Sunday and was a fast mover, holding on to a top ten spot the majority of the day, until a mis-hap with the Penske driver Sam Hornish, and Roush-Fenway's 99 Ford Carl Edwards. Earnhardt spun out as did Edwards and hit the wall, forcing Earnhardt to finish in 21st. Edwards finished in 18th.

Kyle Busch took home second position today. "So close, yet so far away it seems like here at Martinsville time and time again," said Busch in a post race interview. "(We) struggled early, got behind.  Spun out there, was able to work on it, get ourselves a pretty decent car.  Probably a third- or fourth-place car.  I think we were able to come home second there."

It's been a difficult year for the No. 18 M&M's team, they are not in the Chase this year, they fell out of contention after a rough night in Richmond.

Johnson has stolen the lead from Brad Keselowski. The No. 2 Miller Lite team fell two points in standings after finishing sixth. He started the day in 32nd, made a solid run and claimed the lead but couldn't hold on to it until the end. When asked what this meant after the race, Keselowski responded, "Means you can't count this team out.  This team has a tremendous amount of heart. I'm proud of them."

He went on to say, " This championship is going to come down to Homestead.  You have to be in a position where you're in shot of it.  We have to do what we need to do to be in contention at Homestead."

Looking ahead, Keselowski said,  "we have Texas coming up, very similar to Chicago.  I'm sure it's going to be a duel with the 48 there.  We'll keep fighting the good fight and really proud of today."

Clint Bowyer is now third in points. He was also one caught in mayhem last spring in Martinsville but the No. 15 Toyota team faced better luck today. The Kansas native was a threat for victory, as was teammate Brian Vickers. Bowyer finished in fifth and is now third in points.

Bowyer told media, "  It is what it is.  It was a good day for us.  I thought we had a car capable of winning.  As soon as it got cool, I got a little bit tight.  We lost track position when they beat us out of the pits there and I never could regain it."

This is the highest spot for the Michael Waltrip Racing team, owner Michael Waltrip has never been this close to a Championship title.

Perhaps the spotlight should shine on the No. 55 Toyota driver Vickers. He had the fastest car all weekend, and qualified second. He led 27 laps two different times, and battled for a position with Johnson but settled with an eighth place finish. Vickers will be back for a part-time schedule in the No. 55 for MWR.

The biggest heartache of the day was for the No. 11 team. Denny Hamlin faced misfortune today with two speeding penalties that sent him to the rear. When he finally caught up to a top five position, his engine failed and he was sent to the garage for repairs. Hamlin finished in 33rd place and is now 49 points behind the leader, now sitting in fifth position.

Hamlin did take time to speak to media after the race, "It ended in disappointment," he said. "We overcame the pit road penalties, things like that.  Just had a great car.  When these things happen, you just got to suck it up and move on."

His Cup title chances are shot for the season, "There's nothing I can do about it," he continued to say, "One of these days it's going to be our time.  It's just not right now."

When a reporter asked Johnson his thoughts on Hamlin's misfortune, he admitted, "What it does to my mind is say that anything can happen.  I think it was an electrical problem, what we've heard so far.  That can happen to anybody."

He continued to say, " I'm not smiling.  I'm not anything.  It can happen to me.  It can happen to the 2.  It's just one of those Voodoo things you don't do in this sport.  With three races left, anything can happen."

NASCAR's season is quickly coming to a close with three races left: Texas, Phoenix, and Miami-Homestead. It's a three man battle between Johnson, Keselowski and Bowyer.

To date, Kahne is in the best position of his career. After a destructive start to 2012, he's about to finish the season on a high note. He's heading to two tracks where he has a winning history and could win either race. Though his chances for winning the Cup title are now slim, he believes he still has a shot.

"We gained one point in the Chase, so that's good.  We've gained one or two points a week for the last few weeks.  We'll be there in like a year, I guess," he joked with media. " So, yes, we definitely still have a shot.  But we're a ways out.  I wish we were within 20 or 15.  I think we'd be a lot more legit at that point."

Johnson later commented about Kahne, "He's a great driver, great person. I really felt like if we got him in the Chase, he would do a great job and be a threat.  He's certainly showing that.
I think he and that team are going to grow and get stronger as they get more time in the Hendrick system.  He's going to be a threat this year and for years to come."

Sunday football fun-day! Week 1

Football season started today and I for one am excited! If you had visited my house today, you would have thunk you walked into a sports bar. Except I was alone all day.

This is my attempt to write about my opinions on the games I watched today.
Disclaimer: I am not a football journalist! This is my blog, my personal opinion and my personal perspective.

Sure, I'll mix facts with opinion but if you're looking for a statistical,  play-by-play, re-cap of the game, I suggested you check your favorite football teams website.

I have no shame to admit that I am a life-long New England Patriots fan. I grew up in New Hampshire, lived in Boston from 2002 until 2008 and I will forever be a Bostonian sports fan.
I had the privilege to meet some of the players in July when they were guests at New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Lenox 301.

But- I barely know anything about any other teams. I couldn't tell you who the quarter back is for ..Miami, or the Jets or even the Steelers. I decided that this season, I'm going to learn and get to know other teams. I've got the NFL Ticket on Direct TV and I won't let it go to waste.
I do want to eventually play fantasy football. So this season, the  promise I 'force' myself is to learn as much as possible and join a Fantasy League in 2013!

So, without further ado, here's my Sunday football fun-day re-cap.

Patriots 34  v. Titans 13

New England Patriots traveled to Nashville for the season opening game to face off with Tennessee Titans.
I missed the kick-off, shame on me. But it was obvious from the minute I turned the TV on,  the Patriots were the dominate team. Even after Brady was hit in the face and had to nurse a bloody nose, he was able to focus (as usual) and lead the team to victory.
They had a stellar game and the team looked solid. It was the Patriots that I know and love, and I was not disappointed or bored.
Rob Gronkowski scored a touchdown for the team in the second quarter. When he went to the throw the football down for celebration, it fell out of his hand, hit his leg and flew in the other direction. He looked at his empty hand surprised. The referees had to watch the catch and review the play for the opponent had tackled Gronk, but not in time. He caught the football with both hands, had both feet in the end zone and the touchdown was legal.
Today's win marks the ninth straight season-opening win for the Patriots, and it's the current longest streak in the NFL. The Patriots have a habit of making records, to date, they are at three Super Bowl wins.

 Panthers 10 v. Tampa 16

I live in Charlotte's metro-county, so it's fitting that I give my new home team some love and attention. They are not a threat to the Patriots, for one they aren't playing each other this year. Unless of course they make it to the Super Bowl and after today's snooze fest, I don't foresee the team making it to the biggest game of the year. I could be wrong..but the Panthers have a lot of work to do. That is for sure. Cam Newton better step-it up!
The Carolina Panthers flew south to Tampa to play against the Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium. Tampa Bay had the first touch down, leaving the Panthers at zero for the first half. In the third quarter, Newton through a touchdown pass.
It was all the Panthers had for the day.

Seahawks 16 v. Cardinals 20

With the NFL ticket, I got to watch two games at once and the Seahawks were on my laptop while the Panthers were on television.
I decided to pull for Seattle. Call me crazy, but I love the Seahawks colors and they had on cool new uniforms. Plus, I can't wait to visit Seattle, Washington where two of my favorite bloggers (Jess and Cheryl) live.
Cardinals played host to the Seahawks and they were determined to win the season-home opener in their house.
Today's game was not easy to watch, especially since I had to refresh my laptop several times.
Aside that, the teams scored three points in the first half.
By the fourth quarter, Seattle had hope for they were ahead 16-13. Unfortunately,  Arizona had a touchdown that bumped up their score to 20.
In the final 59 seconds, Seahawks had a chance to score the final touchdown, but the Cardinals didn't let that happen. It was a nail-biting intense minute that lasted longer then a minute. We all know 59 seconds left of play time in football, usually means another 5 minutes before either team actually score.

Those were the three games  I focused on the most today.  I tried to pay attention to the Steelers versus Broncos game. The biggest news of day was that my biggest rival, Peyton Manning is now wearing orange and playing quarterback for the Denver, Colorado Broncos. Sure we've known this all summer long, but today was the day the fans 'felt' the change the most. I personally don't care in the least bit where, or who Manning plays for.

Next week:
NASCAR will be starting their 'play off' season also known as "The Chase." I'll be watching that for sure.
I'll highlight Michael Waltrip drivers for my column "Drivers to Watch" on Skirts and Scuffs, which you can read on Friday.
The boys will be practicing in Chicagoland, Illinois on Friday at 1 and 4 PM. Qualifying will be on Saturday at 1:30
The race is scheduled for September 16th at 1 PM and can be seen on ESPN.

Sunday is also the Patriots home-opening game and they'll host the Arizona Cardinals. The game will air on Fox at 1 PM.

30 Days of ABs- Day 2: SIT-UP!

Not only is it a Sunday, it's Labor Day weekend! You're probably sleeping in, relaxing, or going to the beach.
The last thing on your mind is working out. But it's Day two of the Ab Challenge ...so what do you do?

Play calming music.

Find a spot on your floor, and lay down. Stretch your arms above your head. Stretch and hold. Breath in, breath out. Slowly. Inhale. Exhale.  Then put your hands behind your neck. Put your feet on the floor, your knees will be bent.

Slowly - SIT UP! Do this 15 times for three different sets!

When your done, lay there still and inhale...exhale. Close your eyes. Inhale. Exhale.

And then, PLANK!

When your done...go out and enjoy your day!

Other ways to have fun with doing sit-ups, challenge your friends. If you're at a party, this could be a cool drinking game. Play a song, do some sit-ups and the one that does the least has to drink!

If your watching sports of any kind (football, baseball, racing, golf, etc) see how many sit-ups you can do during commercial breaks.

HAVE FUN and BE SAFE this weekend!

A runners journey!

On Tuesday, I attempted to face my biggest workout obstacle: running hills. I have to say that I hate running hills.

Actually, I've always hated to run anywhere for that matter. Of all my years of exercising, I would do any other kind of athletic activity that did not involve running. I tried to play softball when I was a teen, and I even played the 'catchers' position to avoid running. But, I hated running so much, I had to quit softball. I just did not like having to run from one base to another; especially when the batter hit a homerun and I was on first base. That was a hell of a run for me.

So how did I go from hating to run, to loving it and not being able to go a day without a short run?

Four scores and seven years ago..JUST KIDDING! I had to throw in some joke in there.

Living in Boston, you are surrounded by runners. Especially marathon runners, naturally I met a few people that inspired me to run. Still hesitant and reluctant to run, I just did what I could do on the treadmill. One  Boston Marathon Monday I went to watch some of the race. I stood at the 25 mile mark and I was so inspired, I had tears in my eyes. What a feat to accomplish. Yet, it wasn't enough to get me running. No matter how proud I was at my friends for accomplishing a 26 mile run, or a half marathon, a 10K or a 5K...I was not going to join them.

Best running shoes!
In March of 2008, my niece died. The only time I felt peace was when I exercised. I would walk around Lake Quannapowit almost every day. I even brought my bicycle out for a few rides. Sometimes I would Rollerblade around the lake, but I never ran. I might have tried to sprint or jog from time to time but I never got myself to actually run.

That summer I moved out of Massachusetts to live with a man in a small, unknown town in Upstate, New York. The closest well known city was Albany. I felt lost, lonely and miserable and I wasn't sure how to fix my mistake (the mistake was my moving out there). I didn't want to be there, that and the pain of my nieces death was still fresh- as was the pain of losing my favorite job. I joined the YMCA and it was the only place I felt sane, complete, content, peaceful. I would lift weights, take cardio-kickboxing classes, swim and then...I tried to run around the indoor track they had. It was the only thing I could do to keep myself focused on my life. I needed to find a way to enjoy my relationship with my then boyfriend, and I needed to find a way to be happy to live in a small town.

For anyone who has ever lived in the city and moved to small town knows that the difference is big. It was  a hard transition for me. I was used to public transportation- I was used to walking everywhere I went. That was impossible to do in 'small town Upstate, NY.' I had to drive everywhere and it sucked. So ...taking up running a few times around an indoor track is what I did. I started to love running...and when I moved out of town, I didn't quit running. I kept running  and running.

In October 2010, I ran my first 5K and loved it! I've been living in a small town that could possibly be considered a small city...and there are so many sidewalks and places to run. Training here is easy and I love it, especially since I run along side a lake sometimes. Other times I run in a beautiful neighborhood with gorgeous mansions.

In October 2011, I ran the same 5K in Charlotte and I ran slower than the first time. I was disappointed. So I set a goal to run the 2012 5K in less than 30 minutes. Now...I want to finish it in less than 25. I'm pretty ambitious. When I set my mind to something, I go for it. I know there are some facts I need to face about running this 5K  in less than 25...but I feel like I can do it. The course is a bit different this time, and it's a bit flatter then the last two years...so that makes me feel more confident.

I am not the fastest, or the best runner. I feel like I have bad run times often but I don't care I'm running and I feel good when I'm done. I love how good I feel, how energized I get when I'm done with a run. I love how running is me time...and it's also fun time.  I'm hoping to run a 10K in the next year or two and I hope to run a half-marathon in the next four years...just the fact that I believe I can do it is an accomplishment.

Now ... bring it!

30 Day Ab Challenge

I will be hosting a 30 Day Ab Challenge starting September 1st, 2012 for anyone (guys and gals) wanting to participate.

Day 1
To participate you must follow these simple rules.

1. Have fun!
2. Be nice to yourself and remember this is for you- this is your time!
3. Do not compare yourself to other guys and gals, not now, not ever! You will torture yourself if you do this and that's not okay. Respect yourself.
4. Every body type is different and will respond differently to an exercise. Make it work for you.
5. Please be pro-active and respond to me. Let me know how you're doing and if you're enjoying yourself.

You can participate for the full 30 days or you can participate when you can, however, remember you get what you put out.

Regardless of what your goals are, and what your body type is like, you'll never have flat abs if you only do sit-ups. It's important to do a variety of exercises that you enjoy doing.
Do cardio at least 3 times a week. Cardio includes:
a. Zumba and Dancing
b. Cardio kickboxing
c. step aerobics
d. running - walking
e. vigorous and speed swimming
f. cycling
Other forms of exercise:
g. Yoga
h. Pilates
i. weight lifting
j. sports games like baseball, football, etc.
The challenge will work like this:

Please let me know if you're also training for a special event, what ever that may be. I am training for my third 5K race that's going on this October 14th. If you're in Charlotte, I'm encouraging you to join me! It's with Kasey Kahne and the Kasey Kahne Foundation for the third annual "Kahne 5." Please check out the website for detailed information and registration.

I will post a video of me doing an ab exercise, and each day you try to do that one for 3 sets of 15! Remember, this is a challenge. To make it harder, your second set of ab exercise will be the one you did the day before. So at the end of this challenge, you should be able to do 30 different types of ab exercises!

Other ways to succeed at reaching your ab goals is to eat healthy every day. It takes 30 days to create a good habit, so let this be your first 30 days to living a healthier lifestyle! Drink a lot of water, eat tons of veggies and eat fruit. You should also include a protein and unsaturated carbohydrates in 3 of your meals a day.

Please leave a comment if you want to do this and I will keep in touch with you. Fun ways to stay in touch is on twitter. You can follow me at @C_Genevieve. Starting now, you can use hashtag #30daysofabs!
Also let me know if you're a Sweat Pink, Fit Approach ambassador!

It's your workout -so- own it!

I may not be a "world class" athlete (yet), but I do consider myself a successful athlete. I'm consistent, self-motivated and self-disciplined.  Those are three words I tell people they need in their daily lives to reach their goals. Living healthy isn't a fad, or a hobby it's a lifestyle and if you don't make it your lifestyle, you can't possibly reach your goal (whatever it may be).

Not everyone wants to train like an athlete as I do every day and that's fine. A lot of people prefer 'moderation' and that is good too. Please do not misunderstand me. There's no denying however, that consistency, self-motivation and discipline is the only way to reach your goal. You only need an hour of exercise a day, at least three or four times a week to stay in good health.

I also want to say, to be successful in your journey, you have to remember this:

Your journey is 'yours!'
Don't care about what I do in the gym. What you do is for you no matter what anyone says. So, if you choose to walk, run, dance, zumba, yoga, pilates, lift weights, crossfit, cycle, swim, kick box, martial arts, boxing - it's your work out.

Have Fun
Just because you exercise, does not mean it can't be fun. I truly believe, after hearing the comments throughout my workout life, that the number one reason why people don't work out regularly is because they assume they can't have fun...or relax while exercising. Work out time is 'your' time and it's your responsibility to make the most of it. And to be honest, your time is not the same as my time. In shape will not always mean, "my shape." Your shape is yours, have fun! Get out with friends. Take a ball room dance class with your significant other. Play sports with your kids. Whatever you choose to do, make sure you love it and you own it.

You are what you eat!
Eating healthy is important and no...you can not out train, or out run a bad diet. I'm not making that up, it's a biological fact, ask your doctor. That does not mean you can't eat ice cream, drink a beer, have pizza or chocolate. It means you should be moderate. Eat healthier breakfasts, drink more water, include more veggies and fruit in your diet. There is nothing, and I mean nothing wrong with eating a healthy entree, and indulging in a piece of chocolate cake afterwards. You are not contradicting yourself when you do this, you're balancing yourself. It's when you deprive yourself  that you start to feel like you "can't" eat healthy and it's also when you think of it as a 'diet.' Think of it as a lifestyle, it's no different then brushing your teeth or taking a shower.

Hang out with like minded and supportive people.
I once believed you are who your friends are, and some people challenged that belief. I decided that since I do not judge people, that I would open up my time and make room for people who are not of like mind. I dated and lived with a man who is my 100% exact opposite, as were his friends, sister and family. To say it didn't work out is an understatement. It was awful. I lost myself, I lost my identity, I was miserable, I gained weight and lost self-respect. He was un-supportive and tried to change and control me. I was suffocated by him emotionally, mentally, financially and physically.  Fortunately I found myself when I left him. I luckily had enough self-respect to walk away before I was completely destroyed. Stay true to yourself as I promised myself I'd stay true to me. I need to learn to say no more often and not worry how people interpret why I said no.
Fortunately, I found a group of friends that are my opposite and are still supportive. I'm slowly making friends with other athletes, and that's very important to me.
I'm a jock - I'm an athlete.  I train to compete and I challenge people who are better then me, those who run and swim faster, lift heavier and hold better yoga poses. Don't try to keep up with me, keep up with yourself. When I exercise, I'm in 'beast mode.'

I set my standards high, I set my goals high.  This weeks goals are subject to change, but here is an outline:
Sunday: Yoga for Athletes at Gotta Yoga Studio from 2 to 4 PM
Monday: Strength train. Time run a 5K on treadmill.
Tuesday: Swim.
Wednesday: Strength train. Run.
Thursday: Swim. Slow, deep yoga.
Friday: Morning run. Strength train.
Saturday: OFF - Going to Bristol Baby!

FALL GOALS:
5K in September - for St. Judes Hospital and Fox and Hound at Birkdale Village - to finish it.
5K in October - for Kasey Kahne Foundation in Charlotte - to run it in 25 minutes or less.

And I recently found out about a 10K taking place nearby, I'm thinking of running it just to challenge myself.

Snow White and the Huntsman - movie review

If there is anything that I am thankful for about the movie “Snow White and the Huntsman,” it's that it’s not a typical fairy tale story where the heroine Snow White (Kristen Stewart) and the hero (Chris Hemsworth) fall in love, get married in a huge castle filled with extravagant, unnecessary props that are too expensive for anyone to have, and live happily ever after.

The movie is centered on the Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron). Her goal is to hold on to her youth and to live forever— as if aging is a horrible thing—thus confirming to women all over the world that it is okay to fear aging. I hate, no wait, despise that attitude, it puts a damper on being sexy over 36, which I happen to believe 36 is the new thirty-sexy.

With that said, Queen Ravenna does own the film because she commands your attention. I will say that I believe Charlize Theron deserves an Academy Award for her role.

Much like the fairy tale you’ll see at Disney, the wicked Queen speaks to her mirror, “Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?”

Unlike the cute Disney movie, the mirror is a gold plate, and gold, brass object that becomes a statue when he responds to her.

To hold on to her youth, Queen Ravenna must find a way to age - or to kill -  all the young beautiful maidens of the land.

Snow White happens to be the one maiden who can destroy the Queen, but more importantly, if the Queen steals Snow White’s heart, the Queen will live looking like a 25 year old her whole endless life.

As if 25 is the best age, it’s not. Trust me.

I do hate that Queen Ravenna fears aging instead of finding a way to age gracefully, and the film makers made it out to seem that the older a woman gets, the less appealing she is. But I do love that they put Snow White in a position to fight for her life, alongside the Huntsman, as opposed to making her a helpless young lady who fears breaking a nail.

The film is not one for younger audiences, and I’m thankful for that. It’s also not one looking for a hopeless romantic comedy for those who get lost in fairy tale stories that are about unrealistic romance and the unrealistic Prince Charming. It’s a scary, dark science fiction film that’s violent, and Snow White isn’t pretty either, well, not until she cleans up anyway, then she’s beautiful. She’s vicious, almost stronger then the Huntsman, and her nails are dirty.

In the end, we’re left guessing, is she with the Huntsman, or with the Duke? Who knows? Who cares? She regained the power that was rightfully hers; she becomes the Queen of the land, the one in charge of the townspeople, whom everyone adores. She did it by fighting for her life, by stepping out of the norm that women are supposed to be rescued by a man that’ll do it for her.

As for aging, Queen Ravenna needed to learn how to make older look sexy …just saying.

****  I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars solely because of excessive violence - and I don't like sci-fi!

Fashionable sports clothes for the ladies

Several years ago, out in a beautiful city called Boston, a group of women had a genius idea. They were fresh out of college, and looking to start their careers, and they decided to start a t-shirt company. They were also big fans of the Boston Red Sox.
For years, ladies have had to wear embarrassing over-sized t-shirts and jersey's of their favorite team/athlete to a sporting event.
These women, who called themselves, "Homegirls," came out with cute, form fitting t-shirts that all the ladies could wear. Their most successful tank/t-shirt to date is, "Real Women don't date Yankee fans!" They also created other cute sayings like, "I do it with my Sox on!"
Since then ladies in Boston have spent the last decade wearing the cutest Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics shirts and clothes. You can now find these styles on Chowdaheadz.com.
This was one of my (many) looks for a Red Sox game one cold spring evening in 2006. Please take note, that is NOT a Yankee hat; it's YH hat, which stands for Yankee Hater.

I've noticed the trend trickle over  to my favorite sport, NASCAR.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the one guy that sells many shirts for the ladies that allow us to feel sexy, and comfortable at the same time. Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Denny Hamlin and other drivers have similar shirts.
The one stylist in NASCAR that has made a name for herself is Kyle Busch's wife, Samantha. She has a passion for fashion, especially in shoes, and has been designing her husbands t-shirts.

This picture is from the Kyle Busch website

The days female sports fans have to show up at their favorite sporting event wearing shirts that they would get lost in have been long gone for years.
The days of wearing our boyfriends shirts are also gone, unless you're in the privacy of your own home.

Drivers, sports teams and athletes, have also been selling cute jewelry such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and even belly rings. They even have slippers. I wonder if Samantha would ever consider designing a cute heel with the No. 18 on the toe of the shoe.
Where there is room to add a drivers number, name or sponsor, they will put it. Why not? All ladies have a right to show pride in their favorite team/athlete in style.

Your team wins and fans run wild

Last night was the final game for the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup Championships. It was meant to be a historic win in the NHL for either team. Boston Bruins and Vancouver Cunucks were fighting for the win and took it all the way the final game of the series. Both teams played their best and in the end, it was the Boston Bruins who won the title. This was historic for them because it's been since 1972 since the Bruins won the Cup and for the Canucks, they haven't won one since their team was born in 1970.

I would not have watched any of the games had it not been for the man I'm dating. He is a hockey player and fan. He records the game on his DVR and we watched it long after the game started. I had turned off the computer and phone so I wouldn't accidentally find out before the end of the game; being a Boston, Massachusetts fan, I knew I was rooting for the Bruins. Had it not been for them, I may have cheered on the underdog Canucks.

I did not drink let alone get drunk, nor did I cheer or scream, I didn't even get up and dance. I was happy for Boston and of coarse, the Bruins.

My first reaction when the game ended was how odd it was to see the fans still in the stands to watch the Bruins get their Cup. From what I saw, they booed the Chairman who gave the award to Boston but when they skated around the ice with the Cup in their hands, all I could hear were cheers coming from the crowd. They cheered when their very own resident, who plays for the Bruins, got the Cup. It was almost as if the fans were more happy to see a team win.
I could only imagine what the streets of Boston looked like, I had not stopped to think of what was happening on the streets of Vancouver.

My cousin from Montreal had called and left a message on cell phones voicemail to congratulate my team. Little did he know, I wasn't partying or drinking, I was sitting quietly, watching with a smile on my face, happy that the city I call my home had their seventh Championship in ten years for all four professional sports. The New England Patriots won 2001, 2004 and 2005 Super Bowls. The Boston Red Sox won the 2004 and 2007 World Series and the Boston Celtics have won the 2008 NBA Title and now, the Bruins are the 2011 NHL Champions. A victory for die hard hockey fans, a historic moment for them indeed. Think of it, seven titles in ten years. Bostonians are athletes for sure, there's no denying it and their fans are loyal, committed and extremely supportive. In the years I lived in Beantown, I had never heard a lot of cheers for the Bruins.

In 2004 my cousins and I watched the Super Bowl in Kenmore Square; at a bar across the street from Fenway Park. After the game, the fans poured out of bars and cheered the Patriots victory. As a matter of fact, I stayed in the bar a tad bit longer to watch Tom Brady's interview and he said and I can't directly quote him because it's been awhile since I heard it but he did tell the residents of Boston to be careful with their city. The fans didn't hear, they stood in the middle of the streets and started a bonfire in which they danced around. There was a lot of rioting and partying all over the city.
That fall, when the Red Sox finally beat the New York Yankee's in for the Championship and a chance to head to the World Series, fans were out of control. I had not gone out that night, but, I'm sure I would've picked a bar in Kenmore Square, on Lansdown Street. I will forever be grateful I had not done so.
After the game, as expected, fans poured out from everywhere. I can't tell you the details but I know the crowds were celebrating the victory a little too much and the cops came out in full force, with paint guns and all. One cop fired and hit a girl in the eye, she died immediately.

That year, I apologize for not remembering which game it was (Patriots or a Sox victory) somewhere around Northeastern College Campus, a teen was walking across the street while everyone was celebrating and a car drove by and hit him, he later died. The driver of the car never stopped or turned his self in.

Since the news of those incidences broke out, I've forever been fascinated with fans. I want to understand society a bit more and the fascination fans have and the obsession people have for athletes, teams and celebrities alike.
In 2005, during the Patriots Super Bowl, the city of Boston was empty. Cops were out and ready to arrest anyone who tried to act up. The celebrations were at home instead of out in public. In 2008 for the Celtics victory, the crowd was controlled but still celebrating outside on the streets. Last night, Boston fans cheered everywhere they could and according the news reports, only two arrests were made.

In Vancouver, British Columbia, hurt and angry fans decided to riot and tear the city apart.
I ask, what is the point of turning cars over and starting fires in the streets to destroy public property? The last time I heard of this destructive behavior was in Montreal, when the Montreal hockey team either won or lost the Stanley Cup. I also heard this kind of destruction happened during a Guns n'Roses and Metellica concert in Montreal.
It was not the only time or place that things like that happen.
In soccer, fans riot and act dangerously, people die from celebratory victories or from the upset they feel for losing.
That behavior doesn't make sense to me.

So far, in NASCAR I've noticed the rivalry is different. Sure it's out there between fans, especially on the teams Facebook and twitter pages.
Fans hate Kyle Busch and make it obvious.
Fans also hate Dale Jr and they razz out JR Nation.

My question is: "Why? Why the destructive and hateful behavior?"
